She's a kind soft soul, easy to get along with, quiet for the most part, but confident and hides a wild side beneath her otherwise gentle demeanor. She is not at all what you expect from a convicted felon and the newest arrival in a state prison facility.<br><br>Jade is here to serve a 3 year sentence for theft of merchandise from her employer, the owners of a jewelry shop where she worked. She attempted to fight the charges, but this only cost her a plea deal that would have meant less time in prison.<br><br>This morning before the sun had risen she left her old apartment, returned the key, and walked with only a few belongings down to the police station to self surrender and be transported to prison to start her sentence.<br><br>The scene begins as Jade enters the intake room. She is belted at the waist with a brown transport belt, handcuffed, and shackled over the pant leg of her baggy blue jeans.<br><br>Jade sits down on the bench as ordered.<br><br>She is in a mix of emotions, and generally acting out in a pretty typical fashion for a young woman used to a decent life style adapting to the cold spartan conditions of prison, and the harsh and cold treatment of convicts like herself. Though Jade is still likely struggling to identify with the idea that she is in fact a convicted felon, and that the point of begging for someone to listen to her passed back in the court room. Jade insists on whining to the deaf ears of the corrections staff and maybe her own inner conscience that she is innocent and didn't do anything to deserve this. Deserved or not though, Jade can't change her outcome at this point, her guilt has already been determined.<br><br>An officer enters the room for stage on of the intake, he has her remove her shoes. Then Jade is told to stand up and walk down and face the wall. The handcuffs and transport belt are taken off, and Jade is made to take off her sweater. She then stands with her hands on her head while the restraints are put on a shelf. Jade is handcuffed behind the back and then returns to waiting on the bench.<br><br>In the well air conditioned prison intake Jade now sits barefoot and without her sweater. Stress and anxiety progress into boredom, then back into anxiety. There is nothing to stimulate her or remove her focus from her situations, and her arms pinned behind her back with rigid metal cuffs keep her well reminded where she is and what's happening.<br><br>When the CO processing her returns he has her raise her feet up and show him the bottoms and between her toes. Jade looks shocked and humiliated as the officer grabs her ankle and raises her foot into the air to see better. The short chain on the shackles means as he raises one foot up, the other lifts up off the ground and hangs in the air.<br><br>Jade's mugshots are taken, then it's back to more waiting games as Jade continues to moan and huff that this is a mistake. When the CO returns Jade kneels on the bench her shackles and handcuffs are taken off, and an orange ID wrist band is put on her. She is told to stand up, keep her hands behind her back, and walk down and into the intake room at the end of the hall. Jade walks off camera and disappears into the intake room.<br><br>We fade to black for a moment, and when we are back Jade is walking back into the room, now dressed out in a Black and White stripe prison uniform. It is a very stark contrast on her compared to her street clothes. Jade looks a lot more like a convicted criminal now, and she's starting to feel a lot more like one in these clothes too. She walks out of the private intake room with her hands held behind her back, and it seems like the remainder of the attitude she was showing when she walked in was removed along with her clothing. Perhaps putting on the stripes brought her down a peg or two, but she seems a bit quieter and more timid after the outfit change.<br><br>Jade sits on the bench for a moment but is told to get back up and turn around facing away, and soon she is told to put her hands behind her back and a pair of handcuffs is being applied. She kneels to be shackled, and then she's told to wait to go to a cell. The poor girl sits in her new prison clothes and tries to get used to how they feel on her. This is the first time she has ever been handcuffed, shackled, and dressed as a prisoner in her life. She folds over on the bench with dread as the moment where she is locked up behind prison bars grows nearer.

After a humiliating strip and cavity search in part 4, she walks down the hall of the prison with a corrections officer guiding her. She is told to stand and face the bars, and stares into the cell at her new bed. A solid grey featureless block built right into the floor next to a cold steel toilet.<br><br>The bars slide open and she is told to step inside. She waddles in handcuffed and shackled. The CO tells her to place her hands through the port on the door, and removes the handcuffs. Rachel looks around the cell, then heads over to the empty solid block of a prison bunk. She sits down on it's hard surface, her feet still in chains, and contemplates the many hours she will have to pass in this little cage of a home.<br><br>Some time passes in the cell, the noise never stops, very little changes. All Rachel can do is stare out from behind the cell bars at an equally confining cell block hallway. She is at the end of the hall so the guard rarely even fully passes the cell. She can hear the swarm of inmates yelling off in some other pod or cell block. In here it is quieter, probably because she is in a smaller ADSEC block still just being observed.<br><br>The CO does eventually return and handcuffs her again, then tells her to walk to the back of the cell. He enters the cell, tosses a blue mattress onto the bed with a pillow. He orders her up onto the bed on her knees. He pulls off her prison issue orange slides and tosses them down, then removes her shackles. She steps down from the bed as the officer shuts and locks her cell door. Then he has her present her hands again and removes the cuffs.<br><br>Rachel is finally unrestrained after being chained up all day and a long ride in the van going to the prison. She goes to sit on the mattress she has just been given, and eventually resigns to laying on her bed. Is this really what her life is going to be like now, she wonders. How long will she be sitting in a cell all day staring at the walls? The footage time lapses as she spends quite a long time staring up at the ceiling with the soles of her feet placed down at the camera at the foot of her bunk.<br><br>The CO returns again, this time there is no handcuffs, just "stand up, face the wall at the back of the cell, hands on you head". He opens the cell and tosses in a blanket and an ugly looking plastic box with some basics: soap, a toothbrush, toothpaste, a comb, and some paper and a pen.<br><br>Rachel combs out her hair, still wet from when they hosed her down with freezing water during intake (Part 4) she then tosses it back in the box and wraps her self in the scratchy grey blanket. Eventually she lays back, at 10PM the lights go out, and the inmates are expected to be in their beds.<br><br>Rachel tosses and turns on her bunk a bit, then lays still trying to get some rest. It's a fitful rest but eventually she does get some rest. The footage time lapses again, this time much faster as she spends her first night spent in a prison cell. This scene was filmed in real time overnight.<br><br>At 6:00AM the lights turn back on and a CO shouts for the inmates to wake up and be ready for a head count.<br><br>Rachel stands awkwardly by the bunk after tossing her blanket at the foot of her bed. She seems to have had gotten little rest over night. Her hair is a mess and she is still in shock from being suddenly awoken by bright lights and a prison guard shouting at her.<br><br>The CO approaches and we see his POV as he orders poor awkward newbie convict girl Rachel up to the cell door where she is supposed to be standing during the count. Then he chews her out about her version of a "made bed". He then orders her to the back of the cell. He steps inside, puts the inmate in a pair of handcuff, and begins tossing her cell, checking under the mattress and shaking out the blanket. He has her remove her shoes as well to show the bottoms of her feet, and wiggle her toes. It is not clear if he is really looking for contraband, or simply wanted to show his power to invade and tear up her bed, and put her through humiliating little rituals. Finally he tells her she needs to fold the blanket and place it at the bottom of her bed.<br><br>He leaves the cell, shuts the door, and makes Rachel come to the bars have the handcuffs taken off again.<br><br>Rachel makes a rather poor half hearted attempt to fold up the blanket, and then picks up her comb and begins trying to fix her hair while starting to cry. This is morning one of many thousands in here, and every single one of them is going to be a bit like this.<br><br>Some time passes in the cell, then Rachel is served her first prison breakfast: a whole wheat tortilla, runny unsalted and unseasoned scrambled eggs, dry roasted broad beans, a very spotty banana, and a kind of sweet bread thing that looks like 1/3rd of a muffin. The meal is flavorless, the eggs are a disgusting consistency, and everything on the tray is cold. She tries to eat the eggs, some of the wrap, and picks at the dry crunchy dense broad beans, but leaves most of her tray for the CO to pick up when he comes back around.<br><br>After collecting the meal trays, the guard orders Rachel up to the bars for handcuffing again. Then she is told to kneel on the bed, and he enters the cell to put her in shackles again. The restraints will be a constant presence in her life, and for now a daily ritual. She is restrained and told she is going to be taken for a shower. Then she is walked out of the cell.<br><br>
